When:  Multiple Dates (see below)

Setting:  Held both outdoors on the grounds with checkin and checkout via the floral boutique

Notions & Particulars:

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Shepherd's Gate Flower farm while you meander through gardens and floral beds of fragrant flowers and luscious greens and accents.  Upon checking in at the floral boutique, you'll receive a container and pair of shears for your visit.  A staff member will direct you to the choicest picking opportunities and then be available to answer questions or elaborate on the best tips and tricks for harvesting your blooms.  Need a little time to collect your thoughts or simply take it all in?  No problem!  Enjoy a seat in one of our garden vignettes or on the lookout overlooking the fields, possibly even viewing the sheep as they graze (in our opinion, one of the best ways to relax).  When you're finished, head back to the floral boutique to turn in your shears, have your flowers wrapped (or pick out a vase), and checkout before returning home with the bounty of your harvest.

Bonus Opportunity:  On a few select Friday evenings, Shepherd's Gate offers you the opportunity to wind down after a busy week by bringing a meal and a beverage to enjoy while browsing the grounds and harvesting your blooms.  Click on those dates within our online shop to see more details.  Questions?  Send us an email or give us a call.

With all of our PYO opportunities, don't forget to dress appropriately for the outdoors on a farm.  All prices are per person.  Additionally, while we love furry canine kids as much as the next person, we respectfully ask that you leave them at home for farm events.  This ensures both their safety and the safety of our own furry (or feathery) family members.

Dahlia Winterization Workshop

October 26, 2024

What:  Learn how to successfully winterize, clean, divide, and store dahlia tubers

When:  Saturday, October 26th, 10am to noon

Setting:  Held both outdoors on the grounds as well as in our heated "Gatherings" classroom

Notions & Particulars:

Join us for an immersive, hands-on workshop focused on the essential winterization techniques for dahlias, designed to arm gardeners of all levels with the knowledge and practical skills needed to protect their precious tubers from the cold. This dynamic workshop is not just a learning experience—it's an opportunity to dive deep into the particulars of off-season dahlia care, ensuring your blooms return with vigor in the spring.

Throughout the course, participants will engage in a comprehensive curriculum covering key aspects of dahlia winterization. Starting with the critical first step of digging up your tubers, we will guide you through the proper methods to minimize damage and maximize future growth potential. From there, we'll move on to the proper washing techniques, ensuring your dahlias are clean and disease-free. We'll also delve into the particulars of post-season dividing, a good step for maintaining healthy plants and encouraging prolific blooming the following year. Finally, we'll wrap up with expert advice on storing your tubers through the winter months, ensuring they remain viable and ready to plant when spring arrives.

This class is designed to be interactive and hands-on, allowing students to get "down and dirty" with each stage of the process. To fully participate, we recommend dressing appropriately for outdoor work, including long pants, gloves, sturdy shoes, and other weather-appropriate clothing. All necessary tools and materials will be provided. Please note that the class will traverse multiple locations across our farm grounds, both outdoors and indoors, and is subject to rescheduling in the event of severe weather. Participants are urged to keep an eye on their email and our social media for updates. As a token of our appreciation, attendees will also enjoy priority access and discounts at our annual seed and tuber sale in February.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to deepen your gardening skills and ensure your dahlias dazzle for seasons to come.
